Hand Knitting Yarns and Accessories

April Book of the Month

May Book of the Month:

Brave New Knits

by Julie Turjoman

Brave New Knits is the first book to celebrate the convergence of traditional hand-knitting and modern technology. The Internet has made it possible for the knitting community to connect through photos, pattern-sharing, and blogs that document the knitting projects and passions of dozens of designers and enthusiasts. With a Foreword written by Jessica Marshall Forbes, co-founder of Ravelry.com, Brave New Knits includes 26 must-have garment and accessory patterns, all gorgeously photographed by knitting celebrity Jared Flood of Brooklyn Tweed. Contributors range from established designers like Norah Gaughan, Wendy Bernard, Anne Hanson, and knitgrrl Shannon Okey, to rising stars such as Melissa Wehrle, Connie Chang Chinchio, and Hilary Smith Callis. In-depth interviews with the designers reveal their design philosophy and passions. From shapely sweaters and delicate shawls to fingerless gloves and stylish hats, each of the knitted designs features detailed directions and charts to inspire both the beginner and experienced knitter.

KNIT A LONG (KAL)

Our last KAL out of the Knit Red book just didn’t take off, but I’m almost finished with the A Line Hoodie and I was able to show it off at the Clicks & Sticks Guild gathering on Saturday!  I had so many compliments that who knows folks just may want to pick that book up and do it!  I’ll share pics as soon as I’m completed.

In the meantime, I’ve been asked to roll out another KAL and there seems to be a lot of interest around the pattern “Oak Park”.  This is an ebook that contains 2 patterns and you can purchase at the shop in which they will send you a download direct to your email.  There is a cowl, scarf or stole and it’s your choice on which you want to do.  It is color work/block but you are using only one yarn color at a time.   Now that I’ve had time to really look at it, I’m intrigued that its different than anything I’ve done before.

There is some new yarn coming in to the shop that will arrive any day now and I’ve been told it’s perfect for this.  You need 3 color ways (contrasting) and then a light and dark neutral.  Sign up begins now, so feel free to stop in at the shop and sign up.  We will start on Saturday, May 18th @ 1:00.  I hope to see all of you there!

Angie, KAL Coordinator

New Classes are HERE!

Eventide Beaded Scarf

Have you seen the Beaded scarf project by the register for the class?  Perhaps you have already put your name on the list for the class.  Classes are going to be offered starting in January.  Pick your date and pay for the class to reserve your slot.  Multiple dates will be offered.  Karen, who will be teaching the class, works during the week so these classes will be on Saturdays.  We may add an evening session on a weeknight if there are those who aren't available on the weekend.

Class details:

Skill level - intermediate

Yarn -We do ask that you buy your yarn at Yarn Garden.  Purchase it soon as you will need to pick beads for the project.    approximately 450 yards of fingering/sock weight yarn.

Needles - size 6 straight needles.  Circular needles will lead to hours of frustration.  Karen can tell you all about that, she tried.

Pattern:  You need to purchase the pattern through Ravelry download.  The cost is $5.00.

Beads:  The pattern calls for 1108 size  8 glass beads (approximately 3 oz.) Please note Karen used size 6 beads.   She used 4 tubes of size 6 beads purchased at JoAnn.

Homework - Divide your yarn into 2 balls of equal weight.  We can help you with that at the shop. Pre string about 275 beads onto 1 end of your first ball.  This must be done prior to class.

Class cost - $25 for 2 hours.  Karen will teach you the technique and get you started on the project,  if you later find you need more instruction you can schedule an addition class or private lesson for one-on-one instruction.

By now you have realized this project will be a little more expensive.  However, in the words of MasterCard, the finished project is "priceless.".
